If you live here, you already treat Labor Day as an administrative event. The traffic changes, the parking eases, the trolley schedule contracts. What most residents miss is that the town's art calendar runs on its own clock, and this year that clock produces a single Thursday evening when every summer venue and the two most interesting fall-facing gallery shows are all open at the same time.

That night is September 3, 2026. It is the last First Thursdays Art Walk while the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are still running, and it lands four days before the Laguna Art Museum closes its Frank Cuprien retrospective. Miss it and you can still see pieces of the summer, but never again in the same evening.

The Two Cuprien Shows Are One Show

The Cuprien exhibit at the Laguna Art Museum is easy to describe on paper and impossible to describe in the room. "Frank Cuprien: For the Love of the Sea" runs March 21 through September 7, 2026, and it is the anchor of what the museum is doing this summer. If you have driven past LAM at Cliff Drive a dozen times this year and not gone in, you are running out of Sundays.

What is easy to miss is that the show has a sibling two blocks away. The Laguna Plein Air Painters Association mounted "For the Love of the Sea," a juried show of original works by LPAPA artists inspired by Frank Cuprien, presented in collaboration with the Laguna Art Museum's exhibition. The LPAPA Gallery sits at 414 North Coast Highway on Gallery Row, open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month for the Art Walk.

The two shows were designed to be seen together. The museum tells the biographical and historical story of a painter who spent decades looking at the water off Laguna. The LPAPA gallery answers with living painters looking at the same water now. If you only see one, you are reading half of a two-volume book.

Why September 3 Is the Only Night That Works

Take the closing dates seriously. The LAM Cuprien show closes September 7, 2026. The LPAPA sister show is scheduled around the same museum window. The Pageant of the Masters runs nightly July 9 through September 4, 2026, and the Festival of Arts fine art show runs from July 7 through September 3, 2026.

Now overlay the Art Walk. First Thursdays Art Walk, established in 1998, is a free evening on the first Thursday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m., with free trolley service linking more than 40 participating galleries, and includes free admission to the Laguna Art Museum. The first Thursday in September 2026 is September 3.

That is the collision. September 3 is the last day the Festival grounds are open. It is the second-to-last night of the Pageant. It is inside the final week of the Cuprien show at LAM. It is a First Thursday, which means the museum is free after 6, the LPAPA gallery is open until 9, and the trolleys are running the loop.

One evening. Two Cuprien shows, one Art Walk, one open Festival grounds, one Pageant curtain. After September 4, three of those five are closed until next summer.

If you try to do this on September 10, half of it is gone. If you try to do it on the following First Thursday, October 1, the whole summer infrastructure has been packed away and the Cuprien show is off the wall.

The Walk Itself

Start at the museum before dinner. LAM sits at Cliff Drive above Main Beach, and the Cuprien walls are the reason to be there. The show is paired with three others the museum is running through the fall, including work by Marnie Weber and Roger Kuntz that opens or continues on the same evening.

Drop down to Coast Highway and walk north toward Gallery Row. The 414 North address is the LPAPA gallery. This is where the interpretive layer clicks into place. You have just spent 40 minutes looking at Cuprien's seascapes at the museum, and now you are looking at what a room full of contemporary Laguna plein air painters made of the same subject. From Gallery Row, the trolley or a short drive puts you at the Festival of Arts grounds on Laguna Canyon Road for the last hour of the summer show. The Festival features over 100 award-winning Orange County artists working across paintings, glass, ceramics, and photography, and Laguna Beach residents receive free admission to the Fine Art Show, which most residents forget until the season is nearly over. If you have a Pageant ticket that night, the amphitheater curtain is at 8:30. If you don't, the grounds themselves close soon after the Art Walk hours wind down. Either way, September 3 is the last chance to walk them until next July.

The art season in Laguna Beach runs year round through First Thursdays Art Walk, which meets on the first Thursday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m., and the participating galleries reset their walls for a fall calendar that most tourists never see.

LAM's schedule keeps moving. The museum opened a Marnie Weber exhibition on August 1, 2026, running through January 24, 2027, which means the Cuprien walls close and the next major show is already up before you have time to feel the seasonal drop. LPAPA has its own fall bookings. The LPAPA Patron Party and Miniature Auction is planned for September 2026 at the LPAPA Gallery, previewing a collection of miniature works, which is the kind of event that quietly rewards people who live within walking distance and can decide to go the afternoon of.
